Winter weather hits UAE with rain, hail and storms

Dubai: Winter-like weather conditions swept across parts of the UAE on Thursday, December 18, as unstable atmospheric conditions brought heavy rain, hail, thunderstorms and overcast skies to several regions.

Eastern parts of the country were among the first to be affected, with residents reporting persistent rainfall from the early hours of the morning. In some areas, valleys began to flow following sustained downpours, while intermittent showers were observed across nearby inland and coastal regions.

According to the National Centre of Meteorology (NCM), the UAE remains under the influence of a weather system, with unsettled conditions expected to continue into Friday. Forecasts indicate the possibility of rain accompanied by thunder and lightning, with hail reported in isolated areas, particularly in the east and north.

Cloud cover increased across much of the country throughout the day, keeping temperatures lower than usual for this time of year. Weather officials said daytime highs are expected to remain moderate, while temperatures may dip further at night, especially in mountainous regions.

Authorities have urged residents to remain cautious, particularly motorists travelling during periods of reduced visibility. Wet roads, gusty winds and sudden downpours may create hazardous driving conditions, while blowing dust could affect visibility in open areas.

Marine warnings have also been issued, with rough to moderate sea conditions expected at times in the Arabian Gulf and Oman Sea. Fishermen and seagoers have been advised to follow official updates before heading out.

Emergency services and municipal teams remain on standby in areas prone to water accumulation, while residents have been advised to avoid crossing flooded valleys and low-lying areas.

Weather experts noted that such conditions are typical during transitional winter periods, when temperature differences and moisture levels can trigger sudden and intense rainfall. While the weather is expected to gradually stabilise after Friday, officials stressed that conditions may change rapidly.

Residents are encouraged to stay updated through official weather advisories and follow safety instructions as the country experiences one of its more active winter weather spells this season.
