UAE Confirms Start of Shaban as Ramadan Expected in February 2026

The UAE Fatwa Council has announced that Monday, January 19, marks the end of Rajab 1447 AH, with Tuesday, January 20, confirmed as the first day of Shaban, one of the most spiritually significant months in the Islamic calendar.

Shaban holds special importance for Muslims worldwide, serving as a period of reflection and preparation ahead of the holy month of Ramadan. Traditionally, many believers increase acts of worship during Shaban, including fasting, prayer, and charitable giving, as they prepare spiritually and mentally for Ramadan’s demands.

With Shaban now underway, attention naturally turns to the expected start of Ramadan. According to astronomical calculations, Ramadan 1447 AH is expected to begin on either February 18 or 19, 2026, with Thursday, February 19, emerging as the most likely date. However, as with all Islamic months, the official start of Ramadan will be confirmed by moon-sighting committees across the UAE and the wider region.

The Fatwa Council reiterated that moon sighting remains the decisive factor in determining the beginning of Ramadan, ensuring alignment with Islamic tradition. Authorities will announce the official start date after observing the crescent moon at the end of Shaban.

Beyond its spiritual significance, Ramadan also has important social and economic implications in the UAE. Working hours are adjusted, community initiatives expand, and families gather nightly for iftar and taraweeh prayers. The month concludes with Eid Al Fitr, one of the most important celebrations in the Islamic calendar.

The end of Ramadan is also expected to bring the UAE’s first long public holiday weekend of 2026, offering residents an extended break for travel, family gatherings, and celebrations. While official holiday dates will be confirmed closer to the time, Eid Al Fitr typically includes multiple days off for both public and private sector employees.

As Shaban begins, religious authorities encourage Muslims to use the month to strengthen their spiritual routines, seek forgiveness, and prepare for the physical and spiritual discipline of fasting. With Ramadan approaching, anticipation is building across the country for a period marked by worship, community, and reflection.
