UAE issues federal law to protect children from digital risks

Abu Dhabi: The UAE Government has issued a new federal decree law on child digital safety, strengthening protections for children against online risks and promoting the responsible and secure use of technology across the country.

The legislation comes as part of the UAE’s broader efforts to safeguard children’s wellbeing and aligns with the country’s declaration of 2026 as the Year of the Family. Officials said the law reflects a proactive approach to addressing the growing challenges children face in an increasingly digital world.

According to authorities, the decree law establishes a comprehensive framework to protect children from digital threats such as harmful content, cyberbullying, online exploitation and misuse of personal data. It also sets clear responsibilities for parents, educational institutions, digital platforms and service providers to ensure safer online environments for minors.

The law emphasises the importance of awareness, prevention and education, encouraging families and schools to play an active role in guiding children’s digital behaviour. Government bodies will work closely with technology companies to enforce safety standards, age-appropriate content controls and reporting mechanisms for harmful online activity.

Officials said the legislation is designed not only to protect children from risks, but also to enable them to benefit positively from digital tools, innovation and online learning in a secure manner. “The goal is to strike a balance between empowering children through technology and shielding them from its potential harms,” the government said in a statement.

The decree law also supports national efforts to enhance the quality of life and social stability, placing child protection at the centre of the UAE’s long-term development agenda. By introducing clear legal safeguards, the government aims to foster trust among families and reinforce the country’s reputation as a safe place to live and raise children.

Experts say the move places the UAE among a growing group of countries introducing robust digital safety regulations as children’s screen time and online engagement continue to rise globally.

Further details on implementation mechanisms, penalties and compliance requirements are expected to be outlined through executive regulations in the coming months.

As the UAE prepares for the Year of the Family, officials say the new law underscores the country’s commitment to building a secure, inclusive and future-ready digital society for the next generation.
