Bondi Beach shooting: Hero bystander Ahmed Al Ahmed identified

Sydney: The bystander filmed bravely wrestling a gun from one of the attackers during the deadly Bondi Beach shooting has been identified as Ahmed Al Ahmed, a 43-year-old fruit shop owner and father of two.

Verified video footage shows Ahmed charging toward the armed attacker as panic spread through the crowd, seizing the gun and forcing the shooter to retreat. The confrontation, captured by witnesses, has since circulated widely online, with many hailing Ahmed as a hero whose actions may have prevented further bloodshed.

Ahmed remains hospitalised after undergoing surgery for bullet wounds to his arm and hand, his family told Australian media. Despite his injuries, relatives said he acted instinctively to protect others when he realised the danger unfolding around him.

The shooting took place during a Hanukkah event at Bondi Beach, which more than 1,000 people attended. Authorities confirmed that 15 people were killed and dozens more injured in the attack, making it one of the deadliest acts of violence in Sydney’s recent history.

Emergency services rushed to the scene as crowds fled the beachfront area, while police secured the location and launched a major counterterrorism operation. Several suspects were detained as investigators worked through eyewitness accounts and video evidence.

Police have since declared the shooting a terrorist incident, stating that the attack deliberately targeted the Jewish community. Senior officers said there was no ongoing threat to the public but urged residents to remain vigilant as investigations continue.

Political and community leaders across Australia condemned the attack, describing it as an act of hatred aimed at spreading fear. Messages of solidarity poured in from religious organisations and international figures, while tributes for the victims were laid near the scene.

The actions of Ahmed Al Ahmed have drawn widespread praise, with many calling him a symbol of courage in the face of terror. Authorities have not commented on whether he will receive formal recognition, but public support for the injured bystander continues to grow.

Police have appealed for anyone with further information or footage related to the Bondi Beach shooting to contact authorities as the investigation remains ongoing.
