WhatsApp has introduced a new “passkey” option to protect chat backups, allowing users to lock their backups using biometrics or device passcodes instead of traditional passwords. The feature builds on its end-to-end encrypted backups of 2021 but replaces the cumbersome 64-digit key with a simpler, more secure system. Rolling out on both Android and iOS, the update marks a step toward password-free security for billions of chats.
