Interview with Samar Malouf

Director of Admissions at Optalis Healthcare

1. Your journey began in law and then moved into healthcare. What inspired this transition?

Samar Malouf:

My journey did not follow a straight line, but it has always been guided by a desire to help people in meaningful ways. As an attorney in Lebanon, I worked closely with individuals who needed guidance, protection, and clarity during difficult moments. That experience shaped my sense of responsibility toward others.

When I moved to the United States, I saw an opportunity to serve people in a more direct and human-centred way. Healthcare allowed me to do that. It gave me the chance to support patients and families during some of the most vulnerable times in their lives. The transition was not easy, but it felt right. I carried my legal knowledge with me, and over time, I realized how valuable it was in a healthcare setting.

2. How has your legal background influenced your role in admissions and patient services?

Samar Malouf:

My legal background plays a strong role in how I approach my work every day. It taught me to think carefully, pay attention to details, and understand the importance of fairness and compliance.

In admissions, there are many decisions that affect both the patient and the organization. I always make sure those decisions are ethical, clear, and aligned with regulations. It also helps me explain policies to families in a way they can understand. Sometimes, families feel overwhelmed. When you can break things down clearly and honestly, it builds trust.

Legal training also gave me confidence in handling complex situations. Whether it is documentation, patient rights, or communication, I approach each case with responsibility and care.

3. You have over a decade of experience in healthcare. How has that shaped your approach to patient care?

Samar Malouf:

Experience teaches you things that no training can fully prepare you for. Over the years, I have learned that every patient has a story, and every family carries concerns that go beyond medical needs.

My approach today is deeply personal. I do not see admissions as just a process. I see it as the beginning of someone’s care journey. That mindset changes everything. It makes you slow down when needed, listen more carefully, and respond with empathy.

I have also learned the importance of balance. Healthcare can be fast-paced, but you cannot lose the human side of it. Patients and families remember how you made them feel. That is something I carry with me in every interaction.

4. Admissions can often be a stressful process for families. How do you make it smoother for them?

Samar Malouf:

The first step is communication. Families often come to us during uncertain times. They may feel anxious or confused. I make it a priority to listen to their concerns and answer their questions honestly.

I also focus on being present. Sometimes, what families need is not just information but reassurance. A calm and respectful conversation can make a big difference.

At the same time, I work closely with internal teams to ensure everything runs smoothly. Coordination is key. When processes are organized and efficient, families feel more confident in the care their loved ones will receive.

5. You work in a fast-moving environment. How do you maintain both efficiency and empathy?

Samar Malouf:

It comes down to discipline and mindset. I stay organized and plan ahead as much as possible. That allows me to handle tasks quickly without feeling overwhelmed.

But efficiency should never replace empathy. I remind myself that behind every file or call, there is a person who needs support. Even in busy moments, taking a few extra seconds to listen or respond thoughtfully can change the experience for someone.

I also rely on teamwork. When everyone is aligned and communication is clear, it becomes easier to maintain both speed and quality in our work.

6. You speak Arabic, English, and French. How has this helped you in your role?

Samar Malouf:

Language is more than communication. It is a connection. Being able to speak with patients and families in their preferred language builds immediate trust.

Many elderly patients feel more comfortable expressing themselves in their native language. When they can do that, they feel understood and respected. It also reduces misunderstandings and makes the entire process smoother.

Cultural understanding is just as important. Language helps open that door. It allows me to connect with people on a deeper level and guide them with clarity and compassion.

7. You have worked with diverse and high-profile individuals. How do you balance professionalism and trust?

Samar Malouf:

Respect and discretion are essential. Every individual deserves privacy and dignity, regardless of their background.

I always maintain a professional approach. That means listening carefully, speaking clearly, and respecting boundaries. Trust is built over time, through consistency and honesty.

My legal background also helps here. It reinforces the importance of confidentiality and ethical behavior. When people know their information is safe, they feel more comfortable opening up and sharing their needs.

8. What leadership qualities have helped you grow into your current role?

Samar Malouf:

Leadership is not about control. It is about support and clarity. I believe in setting clear expectations and creating an environment where people feel valued.

I focus on communication. When team members understand their roles and feel heard, they perform better. I also encourage growth. Everyone should have the opportunity to learn and improve.

At the same time, accountability is important. A strong team depends on trust, and trust comes from consistency and responsibility.

9. How do you build strong relationships with referral partners and healthcare providers?

Samar Malouf:

Relationships are built on reliability. When partners know they can depend on you, they continue to work with you.

I focus on clear and timely communication. Whether it is a hospital, physician, or care coordinator, I make sure they have the information they need. I also follow up and stay connected.

At the same time, I understand their priorities. When you respect their goals and work together, it creates a stronger partnership. Over time, these relationships become a foundation for growth.

10. What role does faith play in your professional life?

Samar Malouf:

Faith is a guiding force in how I approach my work. It reminds me to act with kindness, patience, and integrity.

In healthcare, you meet people during difficult moments. Faith helps me stay grounded and compassionate. It encourages me to treat every person with dignity and respect.

It also gives me strength. There are challenging days, but faith helps me stay focused on the purpose behind my work.

11. What challenges have you faced in your journey, and how did you overcome them?

Samar Malouf:

One of the biggest challenges was adapting to a new country and a new industry. Starting over is never easy. There are differences in systems, expectations, and culture.

I approached it step by step. I stayed open to learning and worked hard to understand the healthcare environment. I also relied on my past experience. Skills like communication and problem-solving are transferable.

Over time, those challenges became opportunities. They helped me grow and become more resilient.

12. What advice would you give to professionals who want to grow in healthcare leadership?

Samar Malouf:

Stay focused on people. Healthcare is not just about systems or processes. It is about human lives.

Be willing to learn and adapt. Every experience teaches you something valuable. Do not be afraid of challenges. They often lead to growth.

Also, build strong relationships. Whether it is with patients, families, or colleagues, trust is everything. When people trust you, your work becomes more meaningful and impactful.

Finally, stay true to your values. Success is not just about position or recognition. It is about the difference you make in the lives of others.
