Dr. Carolyn M. Rubin

Purpose Factor Licensed Facilitator | Keynote Speaker | Leadership Mentor & Coach

Leadership is rarely a straight line. Most leaders grow through experience, unexpected challenges, and the people they meet along the way. Some lessons come from success. Others arrive during difficult moments that test patience and confidence.

For Dr. Carolyn M. Rubin, leadership has never been defined by titles alone. Her approach is simple and deeply personal. Leadership, in her view, begins with people.

With more than thirty years of experience in healthcare operations, leadership development, and mentorship, Dr. Rubin has spent much of her career guiding teams and helping professionals grow. Today, she serves as Senior Vice President of Practice Management Solutions at Beacon Oral Specialists, where she works closely with healthcare leaders and teams to strengthen operations and support patient care.

Alongside her executive role, she also leads her own consulting practice, where she mentors professionals and speaks about leadership, resilience, and personal growth.

In this interview with Arabian Business Times, Dr. Rubin shares the experiences that shaped her leadership style and explains why empathy, curiosity, and courage remain essential qualities for leaders today.

Amira: Your career in healthcare spans more than three decades. How did your journey begin?

Dr. Carolyn M. Rubin:
My career started in what many people would consider entry-level roles. I worked as a pharmacy technician and later as a medical assistant. These jobs placed me right in the middle of patient care environments.

The days were often busy and sometimes overwhelming. Healthcare settings move quickly, and there is very little room for mistakes. But those early roles gave me a deep understanding of how healthcare really works.

When you work directly with patients, you see the human side of medicine every single day. Some patients arrive with anxiety. Others come in pain. Many are simply looking for reassurance that someone is listening.

Those experiences stay with you. They teach patience and humility. They also remind you that every patient who walks through the door deserves respect and compassion.

Amira: Did those early roles influence how you approach leadership today?

Dr. Carolyn M. Rubin:
Absolutely. They shaped my entire perspective.

When I later moved into leadership and administrative roles, I already understood the challenges that frontline healthcare workers face. I knew how demanding their jobs could be.

That knowledge changed the way I approached leadership. I realized that strong operations and efficient systems are important, but they are only part of the picture.

People are at the heart of healthcare. When leaders take time to listen and support their teams, organizations become stronger.

Leadership is not just about managing processes. It is also about creating an environment where people feel valued and respected.

Amira: Today, you work in senior leadership at Beacon Oral Specialists. What does your role involve?

Dr. Carolyn M. Rubin:
At Beacon Oral Specialists, my work focuses on practice management and operational strategy.

Healthcare organizations face many challenges today. Regulations continue to evolve. Technology changes quickly. Patient expectations are also growing.

Because of this, leaders must constantly adapt. They need to balance efficiency with compassion.

My role involves helping healthcare teams improve how they operate while still keeping patient care at the center of every decision. That includes guiding leaders, strengthening internal systems, and supporting teams as they navigate change.

In many ways, healthcare leadership requires both structure and flexibility. You need systems that work well, but you also need leaders who can adjust when circumstances shift.

Amira: Over time, you expanded your work beyond healthcare leadership. What led you to start your consulting practice?

Dr. Carolyn M. Rubin:
During my career, I noticed something that surprised me.

Many talented professionals struggle with self-doubt. They may have strong skills and years of experience, yet they hesitate to step into leadership roles.

Others deal with burnout or feel overwhelmed by the demands of their careers.

I realized there was a real need for mentorship and honest conversations about leadership challenges. That realization led me to create Carolyn M Rubin Consulting.

Through this work, I coach professionals, support organizations, and guide individuals who are navigating important career transitions.

Often, the biggest barrier people face is not a lack of ability. It is a lack of confidence in their own potential.

Amira: Another initiative you created is EmpowerFuse. What inspired that platform?

Dr. Carolyn M. Rubin:
EmpowerFuse grew out of a simple idea. People learn a lot from honest conversations.

When we hear the real stories behind someone’s career, we often realize that success is rarely perfect or predictable.

Leaders face doubts just like everyone else. They make mistakes. They encounter setbacks.

Through EmpowerFuse, professionals share those experiences openly. They talk about the challenges as well as the achievements.

These conversations can be powerful because they remind people that growth often comes from difficult moments.

Amira: Emotional intelligence appears to be a major theme in your leadership philosophy. Why does it matter so much?

Dr. Carolyn M. Rubin:
Because leadership involves people.

You can build efficient systems and strong strategies, but if you fail to understand the people around you, leadership becomes very difficult.

Emotional intelligence helps leaders recognize what their teams are experiencing. It allows them to respond with empathy rather than simply reacting to problems.

In healthcare, this awareness is especially important. Professionals often work long hours under pressure. They deal with situations that can be emotionally intense.

Leaders must remain aware of that reality. When people feel supported and respected, they perform better and stay more engaged in their work.

Amira: You often share a perspective about seeing healthcare through the eyes of a patient. Can you explain that idea?

Dr. Carolyn M. Rubin:
It’s a simple principle that I encourage leaders to remember.

Every process, every policy, and every system ultimately affects a patient. Behind the paperwork and technology there is always a person who needs care.

When leaders pause and imagine the experience from the patient’s perspective, it can change the way decisions are made.

It encourages compassion and clarity. And it reminds us why healthcare work matters so much.

Amira: Your work has received several awards and professional recognitions. How do you view those achievements?

Dr. Carolyn M. Rubin:
Recognition is always meaningful, and I am grateful for it.

But the moments that matter most are often much quieter.

Sometimes someone I mentored will reach out months or even years later. They tell me that a conversation we had helped them move forward in their career or gave them the confidence to take on a leadership role.

Those messages mean a great deal to me. They remind me why mentorship and coaching are so important.

Impact on people is always more valuable than any award.

Amira: In addition to leadership and mentoring, you also write about professional development. What role does writing play in your work?

Dr. Carolyn M. Rubin:
Writing allows me to share ideas with a broader audience.

Not everyone can attend a workshop or participate in coaching sessions. Articles and thought leadership pieces give me another way to reach people who are searching for guidance or encouragement.

Writing also encourages reflection. When you put ideas on paper, you start thinking more deeply about the experiences that shaped your career.

And sometimes those reflections help others find direction in their own journeys.

Amira: Mentorship has clearly been a major focus throughout your career. Why do you believe it matters so much?

Dr. Carolyn M. Rubin:

Mentorship creates opportunity.

Many professionals reach a point where they feel uncertain about their next step. A mentor can help them see possibilities that they might not recognize on their own.

Good mentorship does not mean telling someone exactly what to do. Instead, it involves asking thoughtful questions and encouraging individuals to trust their own abilities.

Every leader develops their own style. The goal of mentorship is to help people discover what works for them.

When experienced professionals share their knowledge, they help the next generation grow stronger and more confident.

Amira: Finally, what advice would you offer to professionals who want to grow into leadership roles?

Dr. Carolyn M. Rubin:
First, remain open to learning.

Careers evolve over time. The skills that help you succeed early in your career may need to expand as you move into leadership.

Second, stay connected to your values. Leadership becomes much easier when you understand what truly matters to you.

And finally, believe in your ability to grow.

Many people wait for someone else to give them permission to step forward. But often the strength they need is already within them.

Leadership begins the moment you choose to believe in your potential and use it to help others succeed.
