Sofica Bistriceanu

Family Physician, Researcher in Primary Healthcare

Dr. Sofica Bistriceanu, MD, PhD, is a distinguished family physician whose career reflects a rare blend of medical expertise, research excellence, and deep human understanding. With decades of experience in family medicine, she has dedicated her work to improving patient care while exploring the powerful connection between communication, health, and well-being. Beyond her clinical practice, she is an active contributor to international research forums and academic publications. In this conversation, Dr. Bistriceanu shares the experiences that shaped her journey, the challenges she has navigated, and her vision for the future of patient-centered healthcare.

Amira: To begin with, could you tell us a little about yourself and your journey in medicine?

Dr. Sofica Bistriceanu:

I am a family physician who has always been curious about how different aspects of life influence health. I graduated from the University of Iași in Romania, and later continued my research training in family medicine at Maastricht University in the Netherlands. Over the years, my work has grown across several areas: patient care, research, and participation in international medical communities.

Family medicine appealed to me because it allows a doctor to build long-term relationships with patients and their families. Instead of seeing a person once, you often follow their story for many years. You see how lifestyle, family dynamics, environment, and even emotional experiences shape their health. This long-term perspective makes family medicine very special.

I also started a medical home model through my private practice more than a decade ago. The idea is simple: provide continuous and personalized care while building a strong connection with patients. In addition to my clinical work, I have presented research at many international conferences and published articles in medical journals. I also serve on editorial boards and in professional organizations focused on improving healthcare and patient communication.

Outside of medicine, I have another passion: writing poetry. I have published seven volumes of poetry, and writing helps me reflect on life and the human side of the profession.

Amira: What inspired you to choose family medicine as your field?

Dr. Sofica Bistriceanu:

What attracted me most to family medicine was the opportunity to observe health over a long period. When you treat members of the same family for years, you begin to understand how many factors influence a person’s health: genetics, lifestyle, education, relationships, and environment.

Over time, these observations helped me see how strongly communication and emotional experiences affect well-being. That realization shaped my approach to medicine.

The medical home model that I introduced in my practice reflects this idea. Many patients, especially elderly individuals with heart problems or mobility difficulties, feel more comfortable receiving medical care at home rather than traveling to clinics or hospitals. Being treated in a familiar environment often reduces stress and makes the experience easier for them.

Technology has also helped improve access to care. Today, we can combine traditional consultations with e-visits when necessary. This flexibility helps physicians manage their workload better and also allows patients to receive timely support.

Amira: Every career comes with challenges. What were some of the major ones you faced?

Dr. Sofica Bistriceanu:

One of the biggest challenges in my professional journey was introducing the medical home model as a private practice. Starting something new always brings uncertainty. Patients need to trust the system, and the results must show that the model truly benefits them.

People care deeply about the quality of healthcare services. They look at how doctors communicate, how accessible the service is, and whether the cost feels fair. Reputation also plays an important role, especially in healthcare, where trust is essential.

The advantage of the medical home model is that it reduces many common difficulties. Patients do not need to travel frequently, and they receive care in a comfortable setting. Over time, this approach strengthens the relationship between physician and patient.

Another challenge has been staying updated in a constantly evolving medical world. I have attended many conferences and collaborated with researchers from different countries. These experiences helped me continue learning and allowed me to exchange ideas with colleagues from around the world.

Amira: Could you share some memorable milestones from your career?

Dr. Sofica Bistriceanu:

There have been many moments that remain meaningful to me. One of the earliest was in 2002, when I presented my first international research project at the WONCA Europe Conference in London. My poster on the benefits of bed rest for acute bronchitis was selected for discussion, which was very encouraging at that stage of my career.

In 2006, another important moment came during the NAPCRG Annual Meeting in Tucson, Arizona. My poster, based on my doctoral thesis, received a perfect rating for excellence among hundreds of presentations.

That same year, I received the “Most Creative Storyboard” award at the NICHQ Annual Forum in Orlando. The project focused on improving waiting time management and communication skills in medical units. I used one of my poems, titled The Snowball, as the structure for presenting the idea.

In later years, I continued presenting research related to communication in healthcare. These projects were recognized at several international conferences, and some received awards for best poster or best presentation.

Amira: Your research focuses strongly on communication and its effects on health. Why is this area so important to you?

Dr. Sofica Bistriceanu:

Through years of clinical observation, I noticed that communication has a powerful influence on human health. Words and attitudes can affect people more deeply than we sometimes realize.

In vulnerable individuals, repeated exposure to negative or disrespectful communication may contribute to stress-related conditions. These can include high blood pressure, metabolic disorders, or emotional distress. Over time, such stress may worsen existing health problems.

Because of these observations, I began studying the relationship between communication patterns and health outcomes. My goal is to encourage healthcare professionals and communities to become more aware of how communication affects well-being.

Respectful and compassionate interaction should always remain a central part of medical practice.

Amira: How do you evaluate the effectiveness of your work as a physician?

Dr. Sofica Bistriceanu:

For me, the most honest indicator is the way patients and their families respond to the care they receive.

When people show appreciation, trust, and loyalty, it means the relationship is built on respect and understanding. Sometimes families return to the same physician for generations, and that continuity is very meaningful.

Children offer perhaps the most sincere feedback. At the end of a consultation, if you ask a child whether they would like to come back again and they respond with a big smile and a “yes,” you know the visit went well. Children rarely hide their feelings, so their reactions can be very revealing.

Amira: What qualities do you believe are essential for good leadership in healthcare?

Dr. Sofica Bistriceanu:

Leadership requires responsibility and awareness of the people around you. A leader must stay attentive to daily work while also supporting colleagues and team members.

Kindness, honesty, and openness to new ideas are important qualities. A good leader respects others’ efforts and creates an environment where everyone feels valued.

Leadership is not simply about authority. It is about earning trust and encouraging collaboration.

Amira: As a woman in medicine, how do you see the evolving role of women in society?

Dr. Sofica Bistriceanu:

The role of women has changed greatly over the years. Today, women are increasingly taking leadership positions in many professions, including healthcare.

In many cases, women show strong sensitivity to emotional cues. This can help build better communication with patients and improve the quality of care. Compassionate work leaves a lasting impression on people who are going through difficult moments.

Understanding different aspects of communication can also help professionals create new ideas and improvements within healthcare systems.

Amira: What are your goals for the coming years?

Dr. Sofica Bistriceanu:

One area that interests me deeply is the influence of cultural differences on health and communication. Culture shapes how people express emotions, manage stress, and interact with medical professionals.

Exploring these differences may help physicians better understand their patients and develop more effective approaches to care.

Amira: Finally, what advice would you offer professionals about maintaining balance in their lives?

Dr. Sofica Bistriceanu:

My advice is very simple: pay attention to burnout.

In demanding professions like medicine, burnout can slowly weaken everything you have worked to build. Taking care of your own well-being is essential.

When professionals maintain balance in their lives, they are better prepared to support and care for others.
