Emirati sprinter Maryam Al Farsi says representing the UAE on the global stage is both an honour and a responsibility, as she reflects on her journey as one of the country’s youngest Olympians and a role model for Arab women in sport.
At just 18 years old, Al Farsi has already made history by competing at the highest level of international athletics, carrying the UAE flag onto the Olympic stage. She says the experience went far beyond personal achievement, symbolising progress for women in the region and challenging long-held perceptions about who belongs in elite sport.
“To represent my country and Arab women in front of the world is something I’m incredibly proud of,” she said, noting that every race carries meaning not just for her, but for those watching back home. Wearing the UAE colours, she added, is a reminder of the trust placed in her to perform with determination and integrity.
Al Farsi’s rise in athletics has not come without challenges. As a female sprinter in a region where track and field is still developing, she has had to overcome limited resources, intense competition, and the pressure of expectations. However, she credits the UAE’s growing investment in women’s sports and youth development for helping her reach the international stage.

The young athlete also highlighted the emotional significance of marching with the UAE delegation at major global events. “Carrying the flag is a moment you never forget,” she said. “It represents your family, your country, and everyone who supported you along the way.”
Looking ahead, Al Farsi remains focused on improving her performance and gaining more international experience. But she says success is not measured by medals alone. For her, progress also means opening doors for future generations of Emirati and Arab female athletes.
