Thiruvananthapuram: Veteran actor, writer, and filmmaker Sreenivasan, one of the most influential figures in Malayalam cinema, has died at the age of 69, Indian media reported on Saturday. He passed away following a prolonged illness, after his health deteriorated in recent days.
According to reports, Sreenivasan was admitted to a hospital in Thrippunithura after his condition worsened. Despite medical care, he could not be revived, and his death was confirmed on Saturday morning. His passing has prompted an outpouring of tributes from across the Indian film industry and beyond.
Widely regarded as a pioneer of socially conscious cinema, Sreenivasan carved a unique place in Malayalam films through his sharp wit, realistic storytelling, and fearless social commentary. Over a career spanning more than four decades, he contributed as an actor, screenwriter, director, and producer, shaping some of the most memorable films in the industry.
He was best known for his collaborations with filmmakers such as Sathyan Anthikad and Priyadarshan, and for scripts that blended humour with biting critique of class divisions, politics, and moral hypocrisy. Many of his works are considered landmarks of Malayalam cinema’s “middle-class realism” movement.
As an actor, Sreenivasan was celebrated for portraying ordinary men with extraordinary depth — characters that felt familiar, flawed, and deeply human. His performances often reflected the struggles of everyday life, earning him both critical acclaim and widespread popularity.
Sreenivasan was also known for mentoring a generation of filmmakers and artists, including his sons Vineeth Sreenivasan and Dhyann Sreenivasan, both of whom have established successful careers in the film industry.
Tributes poured in from fellow actors, directors, and political leaders, many describing his death as an irreplaceable loss to Indian cinema. Fans remembered him not only for his films but for his outspoken views and commitment to meaningful storytelling.
Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by the family later.
