Dubai transformed into a vigorous celebration of Kerala’s cultural heritage as the sixth edition of the MMDE Thrissur Pooram Festival welcomed more than 30,000 attendees over the UAE National Day weekend. Held at the Etisalat Academy on December 1–2, the event recreated the soul and spectacle of the famed Thrissur Pooram—one of Kerala’s most iconic temple festivals, globally recognized by UNESCO for its cultural significance.

This year’s edition offered an enchanting cultural experience filled with traditional performances, musical showcases, and modern interpretations of Pooram rituals, allowing residents and visitors from various nationalities to connect with Kerala’s rich traditions. The festival attracted families, community groups, and cultural enthusiasts who gathered to witness a rare blend of authenticity and innovation.

Robotic Elephants Steal the Spotlight

A standout attraction at this year’s Thrissur Pooram event was the inclusion of robotic elephants, intricately designed to resemble their traditional counterparts. These mechanical elephants added an innovative twist to the festival, offering the grandeur of a classical Kerala Pooram procession while ensuring safety and modernity—an important consideration in UAE public events.

Each robotic elephant was adorned with traditional golden nettipattams (ornaments), decorative bells, and ceremonial umbrellas, creating a visually striking procession that captivated the crowd.

A Special Tribute to the UAE

In a heartfelt gesture to celebrate the UAE’s 54th National Day, organizers unveiled seven ceremonial umbrellas placed atop seven robotic elephants—each umbrella featuring the image of the rulers of the seven emirates.

The tribute was met with acclamation and appreciation from the audience, symbolizing unity, cultural respect, and the profound connection between the UAE and its diverse emigrant communities.

Organizers stated that this gesture was a way to “express gratitude to the UAE for its support, inclusivity, and opportunity,” especially for the Indian diaspora that forms a key part of the country’s social and cultural fabric.
