Abu Dhabi / UAE – December 1, 2025 — In a move to mark the 54th Eid Al Etihad and reinforce national unity, Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan — President of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) — has directed that seven newly built mosques in Abu Dhabi be named after each of the country’s seven emirates. The seven mosques, located in Mohamed bin Zayed City in Abu Dhabi, are designed to collectively accommodate around 6,000 worshippers.

They cover a total area of approximately 12,000 square metres.Construction of the mosques has been carried out through a coordinated effort of the General Authority of Islamic Affairs, Endowments and Zakat (Awqaf), the Presidential Court and the Department of Municipalities and Transport in Abu Dhabi. The mosques are built in a modern architectural style — blending Islamic heritage and art with contemporary design — according to the Authority.

They are scheduled to open for worshippers in January 2026.

 Purpose and significance

According to Dr. Omar Habtoor Al Darei, Chairman of the General Authority of Islamic Affairs, Endowments and Zakat, this initiative reflects the President’s commitment to instilling the values and spirit of union in future generations. He emphasised that naming the mosques after the Emirates reinforces national unity, shared identity and the collective heritage of the UAE.

The naming initiative comes at a time when the country marks 54 years of federation — a symbolic gesture intended to remind citizens and residents of the unity and solidarity that bind the Emirates together.

The mosques will be open to worshippers from January 2026. Residents of Abu Dhabi — particularly in Mohamed bin Zayed City — will soon have access to these new community and worship centers. With contemporary design and modern amenities, these mosques are expected to serve not just as places of worship, but as community hubs reinforcing national identity and social cohesion.
